School Curriculum, phonics & reading

At Barnston every minute of learning time counts, so we make sure that we provide children with a rich and varied curriculum to enhance their learning. For more information about teaching methods and our curriculum, read the guides below. Right click and then ‘save link as…’ to save to your computer.

All the curriculum documents on this website provide the areas that we teach in the National Curriculum. All detailed plans for each subject are here - they are in the form of Progression of Skills & Knowledge documents for each subject, Long term plans for each subject, Medium term plans for each subject, or links to the scheme that provides these.

If you wish to see any short term planning (weekly), please ask to see the phase leads Mrs Lewis F2, Miss Nichols Y1/2, Mrs Hill Y3/4 and Mr Pipe Y5/6.

We have shown our English progression of skills and our Long term plans but the many other schemes we use are too large to place on the website, as we use Pathways to Writing and Spelling, Accelerated Reader, Fred and Ashley Booth for Guided Reading in KS1/2 and many different poetry resources. Please see Mr Pipe for more information on any of these.

In Maths we use the White Rose Scheme and adapt this to our pupils needs at Barnston - see the link as an example https://assets.whiteroseeducation.com/Content/new-schemes/wrm-new-sol-sample.pdf

Alongside White Rose maths scheme, we use Mastery Maths & Gavin Metcalf Reasoning and Problem Solving resources. For more information on maths see Miss Nichols as Maths lead, as the progression of skills and White Rose scheme are too big to place on the website as per other subjects. Please do look at our calculations policy, as this demonstrates our methods of teaching maths in each year group.

LOng term Curriculum Plans

Please click on the subject below to read the curriculum plans for each cycle over 2 years - cycle 1 is even years e.g. 2022, 2024,2026, cycle 2 odd years i.e. 2023, 2025, 2027, 2029.

MEDIUM TERM CURRICULUM PLANS

We have a PE/Games specialist who uses the framework of ‘Get set 4 PE’ and adapts this to meet the specific needs of our children continuously for every session, hence the MTPs are not on here as they are too long and complex.
